English Cream Golden Retrievers are sturdy, medium-large sized dog. They
have a smooth, medium-haired double coat that is easy to groom. These are
lovable, well-mannered, intelligent dogs with a great charm. They are easily
trained, and always patient and gentle with children. They are friendly with
everyone, including other dogs. Devoted and self-assured, they are a popular
family dog. Although they do not have the temperament to attack, they make good
watchdogs, as they will loudly signal a stranger's approach. They love people
and enjoy pleasing their masters, so obedience training can be very rewarding.
They can be trained to hunt, tracking, retrieve, compete and performing tricks.
As their name suggests, they are natural retrievers and also love to swim.
The Golden Retriever breed
originating in the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800s, by crossing the
original yellow Flat-Coated Retriever, with the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel.
The breed began to be called the “English Golden Retriever” since most of the
world, outside of the US (and Canada) go by the KC (British Kennel Club)
standards. So the term "English" Golden retriever is given to Goldens
that have a genealogy and have been bred according to the British Kennel Clubs
standards. The English Cream Golden Retriever is a light variation of the
standards set by the British Kennel Club for Golden Retrievers. The choice of
the cream over a darker English Golden is an aesthetic one--the light coat and
the big dark eyes make a beautiful dog that is very attractive to dog
enthusiasts.
There are some major
differences between the AKC (American) Golden and the KC (English) Golden. In
appearance, English Goldens have more level top line with legs more straight,
American Golden Retrievers usually have slightly sloping top line with legs
standing more out. The loin and legs of the English Golden is strong and
muscular with good second thighs and well bent stifles. Hocks are well let down
and straight when viewed from rear, neither turning in nor out.
Health concerns, however,
are the greatest reason why a serious dog seeker will consider purchasing an
English Golden over an American Golden. The incidence of cancer among English
retriever bloodlines is significantly lower than in the American lines and the
median age of an English Golden is 12 years and 3 months according to the
study, but the median age of an American Golden is only 10 years and 8 months.
On average an English Golden will live longer than an American Golden and will
get cancer only about half as often as an American Golden. The money saved in
purchasing an American Golden pales in comparison to the vet bills accumulated
over the dog's lifespan.
In short English creams are
intelligent and healthy with a calm, laid back temperament. They are an
excellent choice for families or individuals who want a loving companion.
